To be diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, individuals must have six of the nine characteristics in either or both categories of inattention and hyperactive/impulsive criteria from the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).
A number of symptoms must be present prior to age 12 years, as well as, present in two or more settings such as home, school and/or work, in social settings, and other activities. In addition, the symptoms must clearly interfere with, or reduce the quality of, social, academic, or occupational functioning.
Symptoms seen in children and teenagers must be more frequent or severe compared to other children the same age. Symptoms seen in adults must persist from childhood and continue through the time of diagnosis with symptoms interfering in the ability to function in areas of daily life.
Comprehensive Assessment
Comprehensive ADHD Assessments are available for both children and adults.
We use a variety of assessment tools to evaluate several areas of daily life, as well as assess thinking and some areas of learning differences which are often confused with symptoms of ADHD.
The client or client’s family will receive a follow-up appointment to discuss the results and receive an assessment which they are encouraged to share with their primary care provider and school or college.
